Breaking Surface is an aquatic thriller starring three women who exquisitely challenge the concept of "femininity". Although the heart of the action begins with the immersion of the two half-sisters Ida and Tuva in the icy waters of the north.
The nightmare begins a few days after Christmas when Ida
and Tuva decide to take a dive in a remote Norwegian sea. Diving is for them
something more than a sport, it is part of their family history. This is something
that indissolubly binds Tuva to her mother, leaving Ida on the sidelines, who
risked drowning her sister when she was still a child. This adventure,
therefore, represents an opportunity to share a passion that has often pitted
them against each other. By testing their limits together, the two sisters want
to reconnect. But the aquatic expedition soon turns into a nightmare when a
landslide traps Tuva underwater, amidst the menacing darkness of the depths.
The film then turns into a race against time during which Ida becomes a
superheroine willing to do anything to not let her sister drown. Hypothermia
and the disastrous consequences of numerous dives and very fast ascents

Like any self-respecting genre film, Breaking Surface
manages to keep the viewer on alert from start to finish by devising ingenious
situations that constantly delay the (positive or negative) resolution of the
drama. Purged like the landscapes that inhabit it, the film forces its
protagonists to fully explore their fears. No other character, except Tuva's
dog who gives us an extraordinary performance, distracts us from the harrowing
drama that Ida is experiencing. Her animal instinct seems to expand more every second
transforming it into pure action. Tempted to escape from this anxious nightmare
but unable to do so, the viewer finds himself having to deal with both his
anxieties and his voyeuristic spirit, in an effective and ruthless coming and
going. Breaking Surface is full of adventure, action drama film. It's worth
watching this movie.
